About the Global and International Studies Program

The Global and International Studies program is based at Leonardtown High School. It focuses on offering students intensive classes designed to increase their understanding of the international community, highlighting the subjects of English and Social Studies. Foreign language is also another important component of the program, requiring that GIS students take at least four years of a world language, with at least three of these years being that of the same language.

Every student in the Global and International Studies Program must complete a Capstone project that spans their junior and senior years. The project topic is chosen by the student and is supposed to link to a global issue. There is the option for students to work with a partner but each partner is expected to have a different focus of the same general topic. The project has three components; a paper, a product, and a presentation. The paper and presentation make up 50% of the student's GIS 3 class grade and the product makes up the other 50%. The students have the option to create a website, documentary, or exhibit for their product. The presentation is given in the autumn of their senior year to a panel of judges assembled from the local members of the community.
